The Case of the Misbehaving Shopify Product Order: A Journey to Organize the Unruly

Let me take you on a journey—a riveting one at that—where we step into the shoes of Nina. Picture this: Nina, knee-deep in the e-commerce world, swimming among a pool of products on our Shopify store. Her task? Simple in theory, yet proving to be an exceptional dance with futility. She tried to rearrange products, eager to see her Cheese, Sardine, and Peanut Butter sit cozily next to each other. But alas, her efforts vanished into the digital ether, and stubborn Sheep (Lamb, as we know it)`trailed alongside the Cheese like an uninvited encore.

A Digital Riddle Wrapped in a Pandemonium Enigma

Nina, after closely following Shopify’s sacred scroll of instructions, found herself stuck. Her products shuffled without rhyme or reason. Now, we're no strangers to the digital Twilight Zone, where logic sometimes takes a backseat. Nina cleared caches like a mad hatter banishing hat-hunger—no dice. She even called on the powers of multiple browsers, hoping new eyes might see truth. Yet her pixels danced to a rebellious tune. What’s one to do when internet wisdom mocks them with its operatic drama?

Time to Grab Our Diagnostic Hat

Before flying off the handle—we’ve all been there, no judgment—let’s play detective. Our first suspect: The Theme Customization. Shopify themes come with quirky personalities. Some themes, while promising easy customization, hide their control buttons under cloaks of code.

  1. Check Theme Settings: Go to Online Store > Themes > Customize.
  2. Sneak into the section or collection list where your products are. Does it allow manual product sorting? If yes, you've got the power there.
  3. If not, the theme might be bossing you around with default sorting rules—let’s check.

Drifting into the Liquid Path

Aside: Remember when we first tried crafting at our high school arts night, armed with glue guns and glitter? That’s us with code. Our Liquid templates in Shopify are the glue guns—tools of creative and technical chaos—allowing us to paint our shop’s dance floor.

Peep inside here:

{%- assign product_list = collection.products | sort: 'custom' -%}

Check if your product order is handpicked. If you see something like sort: 'title' or sort:'price', hold on! Those cheeky little words dictate our visual symphony, and that’s not it. Update the sorting filter to 'custom'.

Cache Be Gone: A Necessary Sacrament

Nina emptied caches but for sanity’s sake and clarity—like a twice-familiar ghost—let’s say it again. Web caches love to hold on to the past.

  • Try a deep clean: Inspect the site using the right-click Inspect then Empty Cache and Hard Reload!

The Saga Continues with Collection Adjustment

Sometimes, the culprit lies not in our stars but in our Collections feature setting. Collection sort order might be stealing the limelight unintentionally.

  1. Navigate to Products > Collections.
  2. Open naughty Collection.
  3. Check the 'Sort' button and badges. It may be on ‘Best Selling’ or ‘Created Date’.

Now align it with manual settings like Manual Order. You then control this from the 'Products Order' inside the collection view—how breathtakingly empowering!

We Are Not Alone: Bridging Tech with Human Touch

Our voyage with Nina brings us closer as we untangle tech puzzles—without losing what makes us human (a sprinkle of joy, a splash of humor). If after these gallant efforts, the product list isn't bowing to commands, it's always an option to reach out to Shopify Support. They may have secret insight we mere mortals overlook.

Nevertheless, thanks for walking this path with us. Remember that problem-solving is rarely a solo act; it’s a wonderfully chaotic dance of community wisdom, trial, and triumph. Here’s a toast to Nina and to us! We shall not be cowed by rebelling product orderings. Instead, together, we navigate the digital tapestry, armed with curiosity and intrepid hearts.

And let’s hope our Cheese and Sardine get along swimmingly next to Peanut Butter. Bon voyage in your Shopify adventures!
